Aligning standards for a joined up vision of public services

Launched in April 2016, the Local Government Digital Service Standard was created by LocalGov Digital in partnership with the Government Digital Service. It was based on GDS’ own service standard which was adapted to meet the needs of local public service delivery.

Since then, it has become a great success, articulating what a good digital service looks like and educating councils in what needs to be done to get there. Many councils have the standard embedded in their strategies and approaches to digital transformation, and there are fantastic example of services being assessed against the standard, such as this one at Hackney Council.

However, it’s time for a bit of a change.

In a blog post, GDS announced last September that their digital service standard needed to be updated, and they reached out to LocalGov Digital to see if we could merge the two standards. After all, standards can’t be as effective as we’d like them to be when there are two of them. A workshop took place in March this year to find common ground and a broad consensus was achieved to agree to merging the standards in future.

This work is continuing and the final draft of the new Service Standard will be published later this year.

What happens next

There needs to be some consultation with those organisations actively using the current local digital service standard to ensure they are aware of the changes coming up, and what tweaks they may need to make to processes and templates to reflect them. This will be done in two ways:

  • By making a copy of the draft available to comment once it is ready
  • By running an online workshop through which questions can be answered and discussion take place about the new standard
